Information for International applicants

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of a Bachelor's degree with at least Second Class Honours or Category II in one of the human and/or social sciences, or an area of study deemed relevant by the Board. All applicants shall be required to demonstrate that they have the necessary aptitude and disposition to follow the Course with profit. Professional aptitude and disposition shall be measured by means of exercises involving a personal interview and may include a group discussion. Applicants who obtain less than 60% for the professional aptitude and the disposition criterion shall automatically not be admitted into the Course. The maximum number of students shall be limited to 26 students. When the number is so limited and the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants shall be selected during an interview, according to the following criteria which shall be published at the time of the call for applications: (a) degree type and classification - 30% (b) experience in the area - 15% (c) other postgraduate qualifications in relevant area - 5% and (d) professional aptitude and disposition - 50%. The interviewing board shall be appointed by the Board and shall be composed of at least three members. For the purpose of selection, applicants whose qualifications as stipulated above were obtained by 31 August preceding the commencement of the Course shall be considered first. Requires the submission of a Police Certificate of Conduct.

The M.A. in Transcultural Counselling provides you with extensive training necessary for practicing in the field of counselling. The programme has been titled ‘transcultural’ to reflect the international nature of both the programme faculty and expected student population. This course will allow you to gain a wider exchange of cultural viewpoints and experiences surrounding contemporary counselling theory and practice. You will be trained in counselling in several areas, whilst gaining the opportunity to take up a broader view of the socio-cultural context surrounding counselling in your training. You will also be equipped with knowledge of theories and skills of counselling, as well as the opportunity to practice these skills under supervision.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Arts in Transcultural Counselling - M.A. (T. Couns.) - under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

By the end of the course, you will: • Have a wide range of counselling skills, which you will make use of in individual and group counselling within different settings and cultural contexts. • Be able to successfully apply counselling skills in helping situations while also applying sound ethical and professional judgments. • Learn to appreciate how to fully respect a client’s autonomy and work within approved ethical codes and standards. • Make appropriate choices by applying counselling, psychological and cross-cultural principles in counselling situations. • Have the basic necessary skills to work professionally as a counsellor and further your training.
